The UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 is shaping up to be one of the biggest moments in football next year – and not just for the women’s game. Whether you’re a lifelong fan, a new supporter after the Lionesses’ rise, or just want a reason to take the kids on a summer adventure, this is the one to watch.
Here are 15 things you should know to get clued up and excited.
🇺🇨 1. It’s being held in Switzerland
UEFA awarded hosting rights to Switzerland back in 2023, beating bids from Poland, France, and a Nordic joint proposal. It’s the first time Switzerland has hosted the Women’s Euros.
📅 2. Tournament runs from 2 to 27 July 2025
That’s almost a full month of football. The group stages will kick off on 2 July 2025, with the final scheduled for 27 July 2025.
🏠 3. 8 Swiss cities will host matches
The tournament will take place across eight cities:
- Basel
- Bern
- Geneva
- Zurich
- Lucerne
- Lausanne
- Sion
- St. Gallen
Expect mountain backdrops, packed stadiums, and excellent travel infrastructure.
🏆 4. 16 teams will compete
Like Euro 2022, the tournament will feature 16 national teams, split into four groups. The top two in each group will progress to the quarter-finals.
🚀 5. Qualification ends in late 2024
Qualifiers are underway. Final squads and seeding will be confirmed after playoffs finish in late 2024.
💪 6. England are one of the favourites
The Lionesses – winners of Euro 2022 and finalists in the 2023 World Cup – are considered top contenders alongside Spain, France and Germany.
🚁 7. Travel between cities is easy
Switzerland’s famous rail network means fans can easily attend games in different cities. Consider a Swiss Travel Pass if you plan to follow your team around.
🌍 8. Sustainability is a big theme
UEFA and Switzerland are pushing for a climate-conscious tournament. That includes renewable energy at venues, free public transport on matchdays, and recycling initiatives.
🎓 9. Great excuse for a family trip
Switzerland in July = mountain lakes, alpine hikes, and football. Perfect for combining sport with a family-friendly summer holiday.
🍻 10. Fan zones will be everywhere
Expect big screens, food trucks, and music in the host cities. Fan zones proved hugely successful during Euro 2022, especially for families and casual fans.
🌟 11. Some young stars to watch
Keep an eye on rising talents like:
- Lauren James (England)
- Salma Paralluelo (Spain)
- Naomi Feller (France)
These players are tipped to shine in 2025.
⭐ 12. Legacy funding will support grassroots
UEFA has committed to a legacy programme that will support girls’ and women’s football at grassroots level across Europe.
🚫 13. VAR will be used throughout
Like in the men’s tournaments, Video Assistant Referee (VAR) will be implemented at all stages to assist with key decisions.
🎟️ 14. Expect record ticket demand
After Euro 2022 broke attendance records, ticket demand for 2025 will be huge. UEFA will offer early-access registration in late 2024 – get on the mailing list early.
🥳 15. It could be the biggest yet
With global attention on the women’s game growing, Euro 2025 is likely to smash viewership records, boost sponsorship, and inspire a new generation.
